A little background. No, not on the blend just yet, but the events leading up to trying the blend. I had just made a run to Jack in the Box and was belching fire. (Damn you, spicy chicken sammich!) The time I got home? Midnight. So, technically, it was morning by the time I tried Morning Blossom.

I found it odd that it was named as such, given its ingredients - peppermint, spearmint, rose, ginger and alfalfa. Neither spearmint or peppermint can be considered wake-up herbs by any stretch, or rose for that matter. Ginger? I suppose that "could" have zing to it, and I can't say I know much about alfalfa other than its status as herbivore bait.

Most of the ingredients of the blend were readily apparent. Peppermint and spearmint took up the leafy leverage, while purple flecks of rose, beige alfalfa, and bits of ginger rounded it out. As for the aroma, no surprise there. Peppermint cleaned out the sinuses with the fluoride-like spearmint picking up the leftovers.

Brewing instructions for all of Sacred Rose's tisanes called for 1 teaspoon per cup and a steep of three-to-five minutes. Like with all the others, I obeyed the recommendations to the letter and infused at the greater length of time.

The liquor brewed to a very bold, foggy prime-yellow. Can't say I've ever run into either a tea or tisane that ever yellowed this much. It almost makes me wish there was snow to pour it on, so as to trick passersby. (End of inappropriate joke. Moving on.) The aroma had a citrusy profile, which is odd since there weren't any lemony herbs in the mix. Best guess I could make was the mint-muted ginger. The mints and ginger carried through almost undeterred to the taste. All three dominated the front and middle, whereas the finish was...something else. Floral maybe? I dunno. In short, it earned a very big "LIKE!".

Sacred Rose appears to be based out of eastern Long Island, and they are all about utilizing organic herbs to heal the mind, body and soul. Their statements about their products, deeply rooted in New Age spirituality, may be a little far-fetched for non-believers, but Sacred Rose does produced some delicious and interesting blends - mystical powers or not.

Mother Earth Zest is a blend of earthy herbal ingredients, offset by a minty potency. Ginger, spearmint, fennel and sage are all blended (after being apparently finely ground, as the only recognizable bits of this blend are shredded green leaves and a greenish-yellow dusty powder). The scent of the dried herbs has a definitive spiciness to the nose - the mint is evident, as is an earthy-yet-tangy zing. Referring back to the purported holistic properties, this tea is said to be "healing to the root chakra," and is also reported to aid in digestion.

A 5-minute infusion with boiling water brings out the best in this tisane. The liquor is a pale and murky green-yellow with a cloudy green-tea-like appearance, and a similar aroma to that of the dried blend, but with a bit more "funky" smell to it -- in an intriguing way, not quite off-putting.

I'm not sure if it's my palette playing tricks on me, or chalk it up to the natural settling of the ingredients, but the first half-dozen cups of this tea (in the late PM) have been minty and refreshing, with a taste emphasis on the spearmint with a touch of fennel. Now, the last two cup (mid-day) have a much more prominent spiciness and earthiness from the sage and ginger. I'm almost certain it's the latter (settled ingredients), as the last swig in the cup contains quite a bit of dusty settlings and has a higher-potency of that earthiness. Those who prefer their mint teas crisp and clean may want to avoid this one, but for those with a sense of adventure and intrigue, the blend here raises a few eyebrows and provides a unique flavor.

Over the last week or two, this tea has been my go-to cup when reaching for a 10 PM tisane. It makes for a relaxing and tasty cuppa while reading a book in bed before drifting off for some shut-eye. I recommend shaking the container to ensure proper distribution of all ingredients.

An actual dialogue I had with my mother, paraphrased and abridged slightly:

Mom: "We picked up this tea for you in Cabo. It's a cactus tea!"

Me: "That's great!...Wait...it's not 'damiana', is it?"

Mom: "That's it."

Me: "Mom...that's an aphrodisiac."

I only know this because I'm no stranger to the stuff. Damiana is an unassuming shrub native to Texas, Mexico, Central and South America, and parts of the Caribbean. It's historical and medicinal use has primarily been in strengthening the libidos of both women and men. And - oh boy - does it work. I learned that by accident. No, I will not relate how I know that. Totally not PG.

Which brings us to Sacred Rose's Beloved blend, a "consummate alchemy aphrodisiac of damiana leaf, jasmine, hibiscus, hawthorn, pomegranate and wild cherry bark, blended under the Law of Resonance of the One Sacred Heart of the Creational Flame." Yes, that is verbatim from the tisane's profile.

Visually, this was a very striking blend. Bulbs/buds of some sort were the most prominent presence. Hibiscus strands and cherry pieces came in close second. Last were the various green herbs I couldn't identify on sight. Aromatically, the damiana was quite strong; it possessed a naturally woody/mint nose. Rounding out the scent were tart hibiscus and sharp jasmine. A very herbal-smelling blend.

Brewing instructions weren't present on the Sacred Rose site, but with herbal infusions that never mattered. A six-minute steep in boiling water did the trick. I did that with 1 tsp in an 8oz cup.

The liquor infused to a transparent but bold red, a clear mark of the hibiscus presence. The smell was like straight pomegranate juice - heated, of course. The flavor of this was shockingly pleasant. I was expecting a mouthful o' medicine but got a lovely berry taste. Sure, the hibiscus was quite tart, but the cherry and pomegranate added a bit of robust sweetness to the occasion. The fact that it also looked like a rose wine just made it scream, "PASSION!"

While I don't have much of a frame of reference, this was the best damn damiana-based blend I've ever tried. You hardly taste the woody leaf amidst the berrysplosion of taste. It also sweetens well, further adding to the juicy comparison. I'm not sure that's what the Sacred Rose folks were aiming for, but it's a good faux tea to have by candlelight...before breaking out the Barry White.

Women's Wellness - from External Techno Control to Inner Dominion

The global consciousness of women is sculpting a new model of health. This consciousness is evolving from the old focus on dis-ease into the new concept of wellness. Intrinsic in this wellness model is the concept of wholeness. As more and more women move into their innate knowing and embodiment of the Divine Feminine, they are healing and becoming whole.

This inner guidance prompts women to ask themselves: What is my role as a woman, other than a wife, mother, daughter? Is my social life balanced between relating with others and reflection time with self? Am I nurturing others as much as I allow others to nurture me? Do I receive as much time, love and investment of my energy as I give? Is my expression of my creative passion well received in my relationships?

The most basic and fundamental question women ask themselves when looking within is: "Are my choices dis-eased based - consuming and depleting - or wellness - based - enhancing and fulfilling." Taking dominion of our lives and quietly listening to the innate feminine wisdom is cooperating with the consciousness of our wellness.

This wellness consciousness encourages the commitment to living, creating, enjoying and passionately expressing the balanced union of masculine and feminine energies. The more we all personify this natural law of union the more we heal. The channel for this expression is the body/mind of womanhood.

The term body/mind is used because the body and mind are interrelated systems that cannot be separated. The mind's focus encodes thought (father - masculine energy) and emotion (mother - feminine energy) and converts them into substance, which is then stored in the cells of the body.
The merging of the emotional energy field with the physical energy field is the Divine Feminine. The Divine Masculine is the thought seed. This body/mind energy system is dynamic, and one can create healing or dis-ease depending on one's focus.

If the body/mind energy congeals, rather than flows, disease will follow in the location of the frozen energy. If the body/mind energy flows, the energy will thaw, creating healing.

When we listen to the inner guidance of our body/mind system, we can track our mental, emotonal and physical patterns. By translating the body's health or dis-ease language, we can determine whether we are producing dis-ease or wellness.

According to studies, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women, and the leading cause of death for women between the ages of 40-50. Studies also have shown Long Island women have higher risk factors for breast cancer than the national average. As a result of this elevated risk, more and more women on Long Island are raising their consciousness and aligning themselves with holism and holistic modalities and practices.

We can also explore the psycho-spiritual significance of this dis-ease pattern. For instance, the breasts symbolize nurturing, and the giving and receiving in life. Perhaps Long Island women feel an imbalance in the giving and receiving in their lives? Perhaps they require more nurturing and the resulting resentment freezes in their breast tissue, creating a cancerous pattern?

In connecting with the frozen energetic, the congealed imbalance can thaw, the emotions can flow and healing can begin. Once this is brought to surface, lifestyle changes to re-balance the giving and receiving pattern of nurturing can lead to patterns of wellness living rather than dis-ease management. This can be the outcome of looking within and heeding the voice of inner guidance.

As women listen to their inner guidance and respond accordingly, rather than follow the external techno-control model, a "healing" begins to occur rather than a "curing". "Physician heal thyself" is a powerful prescription.
