It has been a gloomy few days here in NYC. The grey clouds are heavy and the tops of skyscrapers are veiled in misty fog. This weather makes it difficult to get up in the morning, and seems to enhance little aches and pains. I’ve been saving a special herbal tea for just the right occasion and I could use a little pick-me-up after this depressing weather. I don’t usually drink tisanes, as I’m not a huge fan of herbal or floral tasting brews. But I love to try new things. I’m glad I kept an open mind.

Sacred Rose teas come in a lovely brown and pink striped box, which brightens up my day just by looking at it. The leaves smell like dried grass and herbs, but I can’t pinpoint anything specific. I added a bunch of the mixture to a cup with a strainer, and poured in the hot water. The brew smells very grassy, which I assume is from the alfalfa and dandelion. There is also a hint of lemon and ginger.

It has a very pleasant taste. Gently grassy, a bit lemony and a slight taste of ginger. It has a nice calming effect. It is very soft and smooth on the tongue. I’ve had a sore throat for a few days, and this tisane is definitely soothing my throat a bit. On this damp and cloudy day, it is warming and cheerful. The grassy flavor makes me hopeful for sunny days out in the park.

Even though I am not an expectant mother, I do have two young children and could use a special tea like this when I am particularly exhausted. If you have any dear mother friends out there, especially those that are expecting, this uplifting tea would make a beautiful gift.

“Matri” (a registered trademark) comes from the Latin for "mother," mater and appears at the front of words like matriarch. According to the website this blend “breathes women in birth in the most high and loving way. This tea mineralizes the physical body. Metaphysically it activates the frequency of manifestation; concept into fruition assisting those who often procrastinate in life.” I’m long past birthing anyone, but I do procrastinate and so this one appealed to me. A little mineralizing probably wouldn’t hurt, either.

The Matri tisane is crafted from nettles, red raspberry, rose hips, alfalfa, dandelion, lemon & ginger. If I remember my herb lore correctly, nettles and dandelion are often used to purify, and red raspberry is used to help with various women’s reproductive system issues. It’s an interesting-looking mix, with lots of alfalfa, which looks like dry grass, rose petals, and even a few rose buds. I didn’t see any rose hips, and wonder if that was a misprint? It had a strong sweet aroma composed of powerful notes of rose, with a citrus and ginger background.

I steeped a generous teaspoonful in 8 oz. of 208F water for 4 minutes in my favorite hand-thrown porcelain cup. The liquor was a medium yellow and softly redolent of lemon, rose, and ginger. The flavor was, smooth and mouth filling, and naturally sweet. (I wouldn’t even add honey to this.) As it rolled over my tongue I tasted rose, lemon, ginger, and an underlying herbiness that must have been the mélange of the remaining ingredients. Altogether it was quite delicious and left my tongue tingling a little. Whether that was the ginger or its vibrational power, I can’t say, but it was nice. I’ve very picky about herbal tisanes, but this one is delicious!

I tried a second 4 minute infusion. The aroma was still strong, and a bit more lemony this time. The flavor was not quite as strong, but still nicely complex with rose leading the way and a gingery finish.

Whether or not you subscribe to the metaphysical claims for this tisane, it is undeniably delicious! Now if it will just help with my procrastination. Highly recommended!

Women's Wellness - from External Techno Control to Inner Dominion

The global consciousness of women is sculpting a new model of health. This consciousness is evolving from the old focus on dis-ease into the new concept of wellness. Intrinsic in this wellness model is the concept of wholeness. As more and more women move into their innate knowing and embodiment of the Divine Feminine, they are healing and becoming whole.

This inner guidance prompts women to ask themselves: What is my role as a woman, other than a wife, mother, daughter? Is my social life balanced between relating with others and reflection time with self? Am I nurturing others as much as I allow others to nurture me? Do I receive as much time, love and investment of my energy as I give? Is my expression of my creative passion well received in my relationships?

The most basic and fundamental question women ask themselves when looking within is: "Are my choices dis-eased based - consuming and depleting - or wellness - based - enhancing and fulfilling." Taking dominion of our lives and quietly listening to the innate feminine wisdom is cooperating with the consciousness of our wellness.

This wellness consciousness encourages the commitment to living, creating, enjoying and passionately expressing the balanced union of masculine and feminine energies. The more we all personify this natural law of union the more we heal. The channel for this expression is the body/mind of womanhood.

According to studies, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women, and the leading cause of death for women between the ages of 40-50. Studies also have shown Long Island women have higher risk factors for breast cancer than the national average. As a result of this elevated risk, more and more women on Long Island are raising their consciousness and aligning themselves with holism and holistic modalities and practices.

We can also explore the psycho-spiritual significance of this dis-ease pattern. For instance, the breasts symbolize nurturing, and the giving and receiving in life. Perhaps Long Island women feel an imbalance in the giving and receiving in their lives? Perhaps they require more nurturing and the resulting resentment freezes in their breast tissue, creating a cancerous pattern?

In connecting with the frozen energetic, the congealed imbalance can thaw, the emotions can flow and healing can begin. Once this is brought to surface, lifestyle changes to re-balance the giving and receiving pattern of nurturing can lead to patterns of wellness living rather than dis-ease management. This can be the outcome of looking within and heeding the voice of inner guidance.

As women listen to their inner guidance and respond accordingly, rather than follow the external techno-control model, a "healing" begins to occur rather than a "curing". "Physician heal thyself" is a powerful prescription.
